Shower glass is tempered glass (known as “safety glass” or “toughened” glass) and by law, is the only type of glass permitted for bathroom shower installations. It is four to five times stronger than standard glass and does not break into sharp shards when it fails, but instead shatters into safe, small oval pebbles. The thermal process that cures tempered glass also makes it heat resistant. It is also used in windshields, architectural glass doors and tables, refrigerator trays, mobile screen protectors and various types of plates and cookware.
Shower glass comes in three thicknesses- 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″. There are many options including clear, ultra-clear “starphire”, acid etched (frosted), rain, and bubble glass. Given the use of beautiful specialty tile used in showers these days, many homeowners prefer clear glass to show off dramatic tilework. Obscure and rain glass are also commonly chosen.
You should also consider using one of the many textured/patterned glass options that could enhance the look of your shower. It can completely change the look of your shower/bathroom and has the added benefit of being easier to keep clean looking versus clear glass.
